New GitHub Project: Project Reporting Narrative Framework for Power BI

A new open-source project, the Project Reporting Narrative Framework for Power BI, addresses challenges in project reporting by transforming metrics into clear narratives. It utilises DAX user-defined functions to create structured commentary from project data, enhancing reporting clarity, consistency, scalability, and compatibility with automation for project and portfolio views.

I’ve published a new open‑source project focused on one of the most common challenges in project and programme reporting: turning metrics into clear, decision‑ready narratives.

The Project Reporting Narrative Framework for Power BI explores how DAX user‑defined functions (UDFs) can be used to generate consistent, structured project commentary directly from project controls data. Instead of relying solely on dashboards and charts, the framework adds a narrative layer that explains reporting context, schedule and cost performance, and the drivers behind variance.

The approach is designed to support delivery conversations by making reporting:

  • Clear and explainable
  • Consistent across projects and programmes
  • Scalable from individual projects to portfolio‑level views
  • Compatible with automated reporting without losing context or intent

The repository includes a working Power BI example, sample data, and reusable DAX patterns that can be adapted to different project environments and PMO setups.
