Data Demystified

This section is opened to all, especially younger learners. Here we will dive into the basics of data and explore how to create user-friendly and accessible data visualisations. I would like to invite you to join me on this exciting venture.

We are living in an era of significant development in technology, and more than ever, it is extremely important to be able to read and understand data.

You probably have heard about voice assistant devices, like Alexa and Siri (those that can operate systems in your house and answer questions), recommendation systems on streaming platforms like Netflix and YouTube (that suggests videos, films and series based on what you have previously watched), and chatbots like ChatGPT. All these systems use Artificial Intelligence (AI for short) to operate. Guess what? There is no AI without data!

I See Data Everywhere!

Data is everywhere, like sports scores (think about your favourite sport and the last competition you have watched), school grades and even your favourite video game points. And did you know that we also generate a lot of data? When we use our computers, tablets, and phones, we often generate data that…

Data Visualisation

Have a look at Figure 2. It shows the grades for English and Mathematics along the different terms displayed on a table. Now look at Figure 3 that shows the grades for English and Mathematics along the different terms displayed on a column chart. In each figure do you find easier to explain what happened…

Creating a Column Chart

Creating a column chart is a great way to visually represent data so it’s easier to understand. A column chart is a type of bar chart that displays data using vertical bars. Each bar represents a category, and the height of the bar corresponds to the value or frequency of that category. Column charts are…

Data and Accessibility

While data visualisation helps many people understand data, it’s very important to ensure that everyone, including those with disabilities, can access and benefit from it. This is where digital accessibility comes into play. But what does this actually mean? Let’s look into a condition called colour blindness. Colour blindness is a condition that affect how…
