Breaking Systemic Barriers for Mothers at Work: What Needs to Chage

Speaking about systemic barriers for women in the workplace is not new. But acting on them? That’s where the real gap still exists.

Recently, I had the opportunity to share part of my journey in the MotherBoard Mums in Tech series, reflecting on what it means to return to the tech industry after a career break, rebuild confidence, and navigate motherhood in a space that still leans heavily on on-site expectations and rigid norms.

What became clear, both in my experience and in conversations with many others, is that these challenges are not about capability. They are about systems.

If we are serious about creating workplaces where women can truly thrive, we need to move beyond well-meaning conversations and focus on tangible action.

That means:

  • embracing flexible, trust-based working models
  • investing in real sponsorship, not token support
  • creating structured and visible pathways for returners
  • building leadership awareness around the realities of caregiving

Because when we fail to address these systemic barriers, we are not just losing talent, we are actively excluding it. I’m sharing my story because visibility matters. It helps others feel seen, understood, and less alone.

But visibility is only the starting point. Real progress happens when organisations are willing to challenge long-standing norms and redesign systems that no longer serve the diverse workforce we have today.

To every mum rebuilding, re-entering, or redefining her path: your journey is valid. And your place in this industry is not something you need to justify. It’s something the system needs to support.
